A City of Glorious History

Satara’s history is known to stretch over 2200 years. The city has been home to some of Maharashtra’s most famous kings, warriors, saints and other prominent personalities. Karad, which is part of the larger Satara district, is probably the oldest place in Satara as it finds mentionin scriptures dating back to 200 B.C. Another place of importance is Viratnagari, which is nothing but modern day Wai. The place was known to be the home of the legendary Pandava brothers during the 13th year of their exile.

Important kingdoms that ruled Satara during different times in history include the Mauryan Empire, the Bahamanis, Adil Shahi Empire, and the Mughals. The golden era of the city’s history, however, began with the advent of Maratha rule under the aegis of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. His successors to the Maratha throne, Chhatrapati Sambhaji and Chhatrapati Shahu, later ruled Satara as well.

Growing Industrial Might

Satara’s industrial scene is witnessing significant changes since the last decade or so. The Maharashtra government has accorded the city the importance it deserves, a fact best borne out by the plan to widen the Satara-Kolhapur-Kagal section of the National Highway. This project is poised to bring about quicker and more seamless vehicular movement between these 3 cities as well as enabling more industries and businesses to set shop in Satara.

Satara is home to a wide variety of industries and other manufacturing facilities. Some of the sectors with an active presence in Satara include food products and beverages, textile, wearing apparel, leather tanning and treatments, wooden articles manufacturing, paper and related products, publishing and print media, chemical and related products, rubber and plastic products, heavy electrical manufacturing, and radio and television.

A majority of the city’s industries are located in its MIDC area, which is well-connected by road.

Numerous Connectivity Options

Satara is connected to important destinations of the country via both road and rail networks. The road widening work on the National Highway 4 passing through the city has further made it easier to reach Satara. Trains towards the south as well as the north of India are fairly frequent through the Satara railway station. Bus connectivity to the city is serviced by the MSRTC. A large number of buses ply daily from Satara to other major cities like Pune, Kolhapur, Mumbai, and Nashik. The surge in travel from Satara has also led to the rise of a very effective private bus transport industry.
